Thoughts of a colored man runtime10/28/2023 ![]() ![]() Love (Dyllón Burnside) and Lust (Da’Vinchi), boyhood friends, one given to poetry, the other to touch, and each devoted to the other through good times and bad.Presenting themselves singly and in a variety of groupings – the latter most joyously arriving in a scene set at the neighborhood barbershop – are: A character known as Lust, for example, isn’t merely the personification of sexual libido, a comic, leering predator, but a young man whose longing for connection finds its most eloquent expression in the physical, both imagined and actual. The names, though, don’t limit the characters, don’t sum them up in tidy signifiers, but rather serve as themes for exploration, starting points for considering the varied and complicated factors that motivate, frustrate and inspire them. Each character goes nameless until the play’s end – with one exception that won’t be spoiled here – though what’s revealed aren’t really names so much as character themes. Set in a Brooklyn neighborhood just beginning to feel the shifts of gentrification, the play tells the stories of seven Black men who share both space and heritage. Both playwright and director are Broadway newcomers, and their Thoughts of a Colored Man is a marvel from start to finish. Broadnax III’s directorial flourishes that are so lovely they elicit gasps. Mixing spoken word, slam poetry, laugh-out-loud comedy, drama and razor-sharp dialogue, Scott’s words are met with Steve H. Scott’s work has been produced at Howard University, Gala Hispanic Theatre, National Black Theater, and the NYC Fringe Festival, and h is latest work The Migration LP is currently being developed at New York Stage and Film. Giving this play its first artistic home was a distinct honor, and we are thrilled to know Keenan’s powerful work will be among the first productions to reopen Broadway. Syracuse Stage, along with Baltimore Center Stage, was proud to premiere Thoughts of a Colored Man. The creative team for Thoughts of a Colored Man includes music by Te’La and Brother Kamau, set design by Robert Brill, co-costume design by Toni-Leslie James and Devario D. The entire producing team is humbled to play a small role in bringing Keenan Scott II and Steve H. More than ever, it is vital for Broadway and theaters across America to make room for the next generation of theater makers: to celebrate their communities, to feel their heartache, and to hear the stories they are ready to tell. ![]() Steve’s direction brings unbridled tenderness to the experience of the contemporary Black male with a full range of humanity. “From our very first reading in 2017, his voice was raw, pure, and honest for our world today. “Keenan’s play has been one of my favorite journeys,” said Moreland in a statement. Thoughts of a Colored Man was workshopped and developed at The Arena Stage and the New York Theatre Workshop for private readings, and had its world premiere at Syracuse Stage for their 2019-2020 season and transferred to Baltimore Center Stage to finish its regional run.
